Orange Polska has acquired a block of spectrum in the 1,800 MHz band from rival mobile operator Polkomtel (Plus) for an undisclosed sum.
The operators signed the relevant agreement in July last year, but have just gained the consent of regulator UKE to transfer the purchased spectrum.
Orange Polska said the new spectrum will enable it to provide customers with better services, however it still has less 1,800 MHz spectrum than other local mobile operators. As such, Orange Polska said it will still have to use rivals’ bandwidth to provide LTE services.
UKE cancelled its planned LTE auction last month, saying it wanted to eliminate any doubt surrounding the procedure. The move followed a complaint from Polkomtel that the process lacked transparency and that Orange Polska and T-Mobile Polska had not been open about “the true extent of [their] cooperation”. Orange and T-Mobile have a network sharing agreement, which they extended last September to include 4G technology.
