France Telecom’s Orange plans to launch its Tunisian 3G network commercially in April and fixed-line services in the country in 2011.
The operator, which won a fixed-line and mobile licence with local partner Divona last year, expects to invest TND1bn (US$728m) on its rollout by 2015.
Orange will compete with Qtel’s Tunisiana and Tunisie Telecom (TT). The latter may fall into new hands as Tecom’s Emirates International Telecommunications is believed to have mandated Rothschild to sell its 35% stake in TT.
Orange expects its 3G network to cover 98% of the population by 2012.
