SingTel-owned Optus is to purchase further 3G spectrum from Qualcomm for an undisclosed fee.
Under the terms of the deal, Optus will acquire licenses of 10 MHz of paired spectrum in the 2100 MHz band. The firm will see its capacity doubled in Australian cities.
Andrew Buay, managing director of Optus Products and Delivery, said: “Optus will use this newly acquired 3G spectrum to support retail and wholesale customer demand for Optus’ increasing range of data services…We believe this transaction will promote continued competition in the Australian mobile services market.”
The deal is subject to approval from Australia’s Foreign Investments Review Board and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.
