Qatari incumbent Ooredoo has appointed Rene Meza to succeed Ross Cormack as CEO of its Myanmar business later this year. Cormack will stay on through a transition period.
Meza, currently managing director at Vodacom Tanzania, has 17 years of telecoms experience, having held top management roles at Airtel Kenya, Zain Kenya and Millicom Pakistan.
Cormack joined Ooredoo in 2003, first leading the mobile business in Qatar and then going on to become CEO of Ooredoo Oman before leading the company’s entry into Myanmar.
Ooredoo Group CEO Dr Nasser Marafih said Reza “has all the qualities to take Ooredoo Myanmar to the next level as we continue to roll out Myanmar’s first 3G only mobile network”.
He praised Cormack as an “inspirational leader for Ooredoo and a key member of the group leadership team and has had a major influence on the development of Ooredoo Qatar and Oman, businesses which are generating strong growth for Ooredoo. In just under two years, he has led the creation of the new Ooredoo operation in Myanmar, one of the world’s fastest changing economies, which will be a significant growth opportunity for the group”.
