The Canadian satellite services company OmniGlobe has announced that it plans to procure, launch and operate a Ka-band satellite over Canada.
OmniGlobe has applied for an orbital slot for its prospective medium-sized spacecraft, which will be named CANUK-1 and launched in the third quarter of 2013.
The company offers a wide variety of telecommunications services across Canada, and states that it has embarked on this satellite project in order to drive company growth and generate currently lacking vital capacity with which it can serve the country’s numerous remote and rural communities.
The satellite will be used to provide broadband, virtual private networking (VPN), video conferencing and voice over IP (VoIP).
The program will be run through the company’s wholly owned subsidiary OmniGlobe Space Inc. OmniGlobe has appointed Judy Harte as Satellite Progam Director. Harte most recently worked for MDA and has been a part of space projects at Skynet, NATO, SES Astra, Hispasat and Eutelsat.
OmniGlobe has not yet selected a manufacturer or a launcher, but is in advanced discussions with a number of potential bidders.
This move is a natural progression from the growth pattern the company has set itself, which manifested last year in its acquisition of the operating business of VSAT service provider RAMTelecom.
