The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Oman issued a statement today in response to an announcement from the country’s state run incumbent Omantel on 4G.
Omantel announced last week that it was on the cusp of launching its LTE 4G network in the Sultanate. However, the TRA issued a statement yesterday that read that: “[Omantel] may have created a wrong perception in the minds of general public about the introduction of 4G LTE services in Oman”.
The RTE explained that what had actually happened was that it had: “awarded 30MHz of the frequency spectrum in the 2.3GHz band to Omantel for the provision of nomadic wireless broadband services under their licence of Fixed Public Telecommunications Services and not for the exploitation under Public Mobile Telecommunications Services Licence.”
The regulator corrected Omantel, publically explaining that Omantel were not regulated to launch mobile services under its current licence and Omantel has “not yet commissioned” a LTE network. What it had actually been licensed to do was to carry out tests on fixed broadband – not wireless or mobile – only.
Omantel did not respond to requests for comment.
