France Telecom’s UK mobile subsidiary Orange has urged local regulator Ofcom to provide independent measurements of 3G networks.
This comes after rival operator 3, which says its own 3G network is the UK’s largest, filed a complaint with the Advertising Standards Authority. The body ruled that an ad which said the group “covers more people in the UK than any other operator” was “likely to mislead”.
Orange said that its ad was referring to the number of people covered rather than the geographical area.
Both Orange and 3 said the case highlighted the need for independent verification.
Speaking to the Financial Times, 3 added that standards needed to be set, especially because of increasing consumer demand for coverage, data capacity and speed. The company went on to call for an independent body be appointed to monitor measurements, suggesting that Ofcom would make the ideal candidate.
