UK telecoms regulator Ofcom has announced it is set to test speech recognition technology with in-home user trials.
The third phase of testing aims to improve recognition accuracy through longer periods of user familiarisation.
The regulator has commissioned The University of Salford to investigate the technology to provide live captions in Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telecommunications for the hearing impaired.
Phase 2 of the trial concluded that there was significant interest in using the software to make business calls, such as in a conversation with a bank manager.
The accompanying report also identified clear indications that longer usage would improve recognition rates considerably.
