The future of UK telecoms regulator Ofcom is in question, with leaked documents giving further details of its possible merger with postal counterpart Postcomm.
The document covering the UK government’s review of public authorities, cited by The Telegraph, lists some 70 bodies that may be scrapped as a result of mergers.
A spokesperson for the Cabinet Office said: “We are not going to comment on the specific details of a leaked document.
“The Government has made it clear that it is committed to radically increasing accountability and improving efficiency. As part of this, work is already underway to make substantial reforms to its public bodies. This work is ongoing and an announcement will be made in due course.
“We deeply regret any extra uncertainty for employees that this irresponsible leak has caused.”
The government is also seeking an immediate investigation into the leak.
A merger between Ofcom and Postcomm was recommended in an independent review published on September 10 into the future of postal service Royal Mail.
Responding to the review at the time, Vince Cable, Secretary of State for the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills, said: “We are determined to safeguard Royal Mail for the future and help it tackle these challenges. We will come forward with new legislation in the autumn.”
