The South African pay-TV operator On Digital Media has signed a contract to lease three transponders on the SES ASTRA 4A satellite for an undisclosed price.
It is welcome capacity for ODM as it nears the launch of its Top TV service in May, an attempt to break the dominance over the South African market held by its current leader, the Naspers’ owned MultiChoice.
ODM is the first of the four entities awarded pay-TV licences in 2007 to reach the market. It is 20% owned by SES Astra and is believed to have invested over R1bn (US$130m) in developing Top TV.
Top TV will carry 55 channels and is aimed at low and middle income subscribers.
