O2 UK, the mobile operator owned by Spanish incumbent Telefonica, plans to roll out a fibre service. Felix Geyr, MD of O2 Home and Broadband announced on the company blog that the company will launch a commercial trial later this year.
O2 has not yet determined where in the UK to conduct the trial, which, according to a company spokesperson, will run for several months. Geyr said that it is currently planned for a service to be available later this year.
The move into fibre networks comes only months after the company announced plans to deploy a public WiFi platform. In February this year O2 had said “O2 WiFi” will offer free hotspot access to customers through partnerships with venue owners and it would initially replace its existing 450 hotspots that are managed by The Cloud, the WiFi provider that was acquired by BSkyB.
