New Zealand’s Telecom Corp said that it is considering a demerger of its network and retail assets in order to take part in the country’s high-speed broadband network initiative.
In 2008, Telecom was instructed by the government to split the operation of the two divisions, which it did but it then refused to hive them off into separate companies.
The move would help ensure that Telecom would benefit from the government’s proposed US$1bn fibre-optic network investment. Companies are being sought to each match that investment in the 10-year project and partners are due to be selected in September this year.
