US-based regional wireless carrier NTelos has announced it will shift its focus on its western markets, which will include selling its 1,900 MHz PCS wireless spectrum licences in eastern Virginia to T-Mobile US for US$56m.
The company said it aims to capitalise on the strong operating performance and favorable competitive position for its retail offering in West Virginia and western Virginia, where it recently extended a commercial partnership with Sprint Corp until 2022.
Besides selling licences, NTelos will wind down its network and retail operations in eastern Virginia over the next 12 months, moving its subscribers to another operator.
The company is also evaluating the sale of other non-strategic assets such as towers and un-deployed spectrum.
NTelos intends to use the proceeds from the divestitures to upgrade its western markets’ network and improve operating results through the expansion of 4G LTE services.
Stephens and UBS advised the company on this transaction and will assist in the potential sale of other non-core assets in the eastern markets.
