Finnish handset maker Nokia is to expand its developer community to help compete in the smartphone market, CTO Rich Green has told Bloomberg. According to the report, Green sees innovation as core to Nokia’s efforts to regain an edge over smartphone rivals Apple and Google.
Nokia is so far losing that battle, which this month claimed the heads of Anssi Vanjoki, head of Nokia’s smartphone division, and CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, who is to be replaced by former Microsoft exec Stephen Elop.
In July, Nokia posted Q2 2010 net profits at E104m, down from E287m in the same period last year.
Some market observers believe that Nokia should even consider embracing third party operating systems if it is to compete effectively.
