Finnish vendor Nokia has announced the acquisition of US mobile analytics company Motally. The US company will help Nokia to design possible apps that can be used on Qt, Meego, Java and Symbian platforms. Nokia hopes that it can begin to tap into the apps market that has been so lucrative for Apple’s iPhone and to a lesser extent Research In Motion’s BlackBerry. Nokia’s smartphones utilise the Symbian platform. Motally, based in San Francisco and two years old, currently employs eight people and successfully raised US$1m in venture capital funding from BlueRun Ventures and angel investor Ron Conway just over a year ago.
When TelecomFinance contacted Nokia, a spokesperson said: “Motally’s service provides an industry-leading mobile analytics service for developers and content partners to understand, track and report in-application user behaviour. In-application analytics are a competitive requirement in the market and this acquisition is designed to enable us to offer our developer and publisher partners a great solution. “
Nokia declined to reveal how much it had paid for Nokia and said that the names of its advisors would remain confidential.
The transaction is expected to close during the third quarter of 2010.
