Canada’s industry minister, Tony Clement, said the he cannot see the auction of any more of the country’s spectrum taking place before the end of 2012.
The minister, speaking to Canada’s National Post, claimed that there were a number of obstacles to the sale of frequencies, including continuing discussions within the government on whether to abolish or at least scale back restrictions on foreign investment.
The minister defended the plan to delay the issuing of additional 4G mobile broadband bandwidth, saying that the government only had one opportunity to do it right.
According to Telegeography, Canada’s nationwide transition from analogue to digital should be finished by August 2011, freeing up the 700MHz of spectrum – the so-called digital dividend. The transition of 2,500MHz-2,690MHz fixed-wireless licences to mobile Broadband Radio Service (BRS) licences is due to complete in March 2011.
