Niger’s telecoms regulator has decided to cut the telecom licences of Zain and Etisalat’s Atlantique by five and three years respectively.
Both operators bought their 15-year licences in 2000.
Almoudan Intakabayet, secretary general of the communications ministry, said the sanctions were approved because the operators breached specifications linked to their licence agreements.
He would not go into further details, but said the operators could choose to appeal the decision or conform to the regulator’s request.
“Zain’s licence was cut by five years because its fault was graver,” Almoudan said.
Niger’s telecom sector is regulated by the Autorite de Regulation Multi-Sectorielle (ARM).
