The Nicaraguan regulator, Telcor, plans to offer two mobile licences to new operators in an auction as it seeks to open up the market beyond the current duopoly of Claro and Movistar.
News agency EFE quotes the head of Telcor, Orlando Castillo, saying that winners would be able to provide mobile, broadband and 4G technology.
Castillo is reportedly concerned that the two dominant operators have not built networks that cover rural and semi-rural areas and that another one million people in the country would welcome being able to use a mobile phone.
Castillo also said that telcos from China, South Korea and Taiwan have already shown an interest in the tender, according to EFE.
