New Zealand plans to hold a 4G auction in the third quarter of 2013, according to a government minister cited in a Reuters report.
The government has not given an estimate of how much it expects to raise from the auction, which will be for frequencies in the 700MHz band, according to the report.
“Indications are that by using the spectrum for 4G mobile networks, we can expect economic benefits for New Zealand of up to NZ$2.4bn (US$2.01bn) over the next 20 years,” said Information Technology Minister Amy Adams.
New Zealand has three mobile operators, Vodafone NZ, Telecom New Zealand and 2degrees.
As TelecomFinance previously reported, Vodafone NZ acquired local fixed line and IT services provider TelstraClear in a deal which was cleared by the regulator last October. The acquisition will strengthen Vodafone NZ’s fixed line voice and broadband offerings.
