Brazil’s new minister for communications, Paulo Bernardo, said in a speech on Monday that a priority for his administration will be the National Broadband Plan.
In a report on the Ministerio das Comunicacoes (Minicom) website, Bernardo was reported to say that he wanted to work with the private sector to meet the challenge of expanding internet access.
Currently, the National Broadband Plan is being managed by state-owned telco Telebras, which held a telecoms monopoly until 1998.
Bernardo also reportedly said that he saw the need for a new regulatory structure for the communications industry. He added that he wanted a broad debate on the issue, which would include public consultations.
