A new submarine fibre-optic cable linking Asia to Europe has been launched by a consortium of nine European, Middle Eastern and South Asian companies.
Telecom Italia Sparkle, the fibre-optic backbone unit of Telecom Italia, announced in a statement on Saturday that the new fibre-optic cable system, known as IMEWE (India-Middle East-Western Europe), will be 13,000km long and has a design capacity of 3.84 tetrabits per second.
Nine major telcos were involved in the project: Bharti Airtel (India), Etisalat (UAE), France Telecom-Orange (France), OGERO (Lebanon), Pakistan Telecommunication Company (Pakistan), Saudi Telecom Company (Saudi Arabia), Telecom Egypt (Egypt), Telecom Italia Sparkle (Italy) and Tata Communications (India).
TI Sparkle’s CEO, Paolo Ferrari, also suggested that the new system would improve the company’s services.
Ferrari said: “With the coming into operations of IMEWE, TI Sparkle will be able to reinforce its proposition of top quality services in the Mediterranean as IMEWE has a diversified landing in Catania, Sicily, versus SMW4 landing in Palermo.
“The two POPs of Catania and Palermo are connected through a state-of-the-art fibre network in ring configuration, providing full resiliency in case of cable faults.”
