UK-based emerging markets WiMax company Auguere Holdings has appointed David Venn to replace Sanjiv Ahuja as its CEO.
Venn’s most recent role was as CEO of Vodafone Ghana, which became profitable under his watch. He has also worked as CEO of the Celtel Zambia.
He replaces Sanjiv Ahuja, who will remain the executive chairman of Augere. Ahuja is also the chairman and CEO of US satellite/terrestrial venture LightSquared.
Ahuja welcomed Venn to the company. He said: “I am certain his extensive experience in telecommunications and emerging markets, along with his strong leadership will help Augere to move on to the next level.”
Established in 2007, Augere aims to deliver fast, reliable broadband services in emerging markets using wireless networks (principally WiMAX).
It launched the Qubee broadband internet brand in Pakistan in 2009, and followed this with a network in Bangladesh in the same year.
It also has access to spectrum in Africa (Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda) and South Asia (Bangladesh, Pakistan, and several Indian states). It said that it is also actively pursuing more access to spectrum in both Africa and Asia.
Its major shareholders include the US hedge fund Harbinger Capital Partners (also a LightSquared backer), France Telecom, PE firm New Silk Route, Vedanta Opportunity Fund and Sanjiv Ahuja himself.
