Iraqi mobile operator Asiacell has appointed Amer Al Sunna as its new CEO, succeeding Diar Ahmed, the company said in a statement.
Sunna most recently served as managing director of Asiacell Iraq and has held several other executive positions with parent company Ooredoo, the Qatar-based operator, since 2010. He was also previously Group COO at Orange.
Asiacell chairman Faruk Mustafa Rasool said: “We are positive that [Sunna’s] vast experience, knowledge and understanding of the issues important to our business and telecom industry will help continue the success of our operation and ensure our success well into the future.”
Ahmed, who served as CEO for almost six years, will continue working for Asiacell as chief adviser to the chairman.
In February this year, Asiacell raised US$1.24bn for 25% of its shares in the Middle East’s largest IPO since 2008. The company, which is Iraq’s second-largest mobile operator in terms of subscribers, is 64%-owned by Ooredoo.
