Australia-Singapore Cable (ASC), a subsidiary of the Australia-based development and contracting group Leighton Contractors, has announced it signed a contract with Alcatel-Lucent to build and operate a submarine cable system linking Australia to Singapore.
Construction is expected to start at the beginning of 2012 and to be operational from 2013.
According to ASC’s statement, the cable system will provide about eight times more capacity than similar regional routes, using “D+ fibre, the latest innovative technology”, which “has an ultimate capacity of at least 6 Tbit/s and over 16 Tbit/s with the 100Gbit/s option.”
According to reports, the project is expected to cost about A$200m (US$217m).
