The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is set to announce a successor to director Ernest Ndukwe shortly, TelecomFinance understands.
Ndukwe has held the position for 10 years, the maximum time allowed under NCC regulations. His second five-year contract ended in February.
Candidates for his role reportedly include NCC insiders including executive vice chairman Bashir Gwandu, the director of cyber security Sylvanus Ehikoya and the director of consumer affairs Lolia Emakpore, according to local daily BusinessDay.
A successor is to be chosen by the NCC’s board but the decision has to be approved by the country’s president Umaru Yar’Adua or, depending on Yar’Adua’s health, by acting president Goodluck Jonathan.
Among other things, the new NCC head will have to oversee the 2.3GHz spectrum auction, which is expected to be launched again this year. The auction initially kicked off in April last year but the government later ordered the commission to abort it after it emerged that the process had been fast-tracked and that the three winners had been chosen on a first-pay, first-serve basis. The process has since been on hold.
