Japanese telco KDDI and conglomerate Sumitomo are reportedly in exclusive talks with Myanmar Post and Telecommunication (MPT) about becoming the state-backed telco’s international partners, sharing its existing licence.
Sumitomo deputy general manager Soe Kyu told Reuters the consortium will agree a partnership with MPT within a couple of months.
Noting that the two companies were shortlisted for the two licences awarded in June to Ooredoo and Telenor, Kyu added “this time we are confident”. No further details about the potential partnership were disclosed.
Reports emerged in October that Myanmar had contacted numerous international communications companies, including Orange, Vodafone and SingTel, about a potential partnership with MPT, currently the nation’s telecoms regulator and sole operator. French telco Orange, the runner-up in the hotly-contested June auction, subsequently said it would be “very keen” to enter into such a partnership.
Myanmar intends to establish a new regulator by 2015 and sell part of MPT, retaining a majority stake.
