Ebenezer Asante has been named as the new CEO of mobile incumbent MTN Rwanda, replacing Khaled Mikkawi.
Asante first joined South Africa’s MTN Group in 2008 as sales and distribution executive at MTN Ghana. Before that, he spent 13 years at multinational consumer goods company Unilever.
In a statement, MTN paid tribute to Mikkawi saying he had helped the company grow its subscriber base from 1.3 million to 3.6 million in four years, adding “his are big shoes to fill”.
Mikkawi had also been the CEO of MTN Liberia until April 2009. The reasons for his departure have not been announced.
MTN has made several executive changes in the last couple of months, partly following the resignation of its CFO Nazir Patel.
In late July, Patel decided to leave the role, held since late 2009, to avoid prejudicing an investigation into claims against him, MTN said in a statement to shareholders. Details of the allegations made against him are not known.
