South Africa’s MTN is seeking to buy Vodacom’s 51% stake in DRC-based Vodacom Congo, Bloomberg reports quoting two people with knowledge of the matter.
In December 2010, Vodacom said it had agreed with local partner Congolese Wireless Network, which holds 49% of Vodacom Congo, to appoint Rothschild to explore options for the Vodacom Congo business.
Vodacom has reportedly been in a dispute with Congolese Wireless Network since at least early 2010 over funding and operational structure after it injected US$484m in the business.
Vodacom Congo has 4.2 million subscribers according to Vodacom’s website.
Vodacom Group, also based in South Africa, is controlled by British company Vodafone.
MTN did not reply to request for comments before press time.
