South African mobile operator MTN plans to deploy 1,000 UMTS base stations in rural areas over the next two year, according to local media reports.
CTO Kanagaratnam Lambotharan was quoted saying in ITNewsAfrica that MTN made substantial investment in solar powered radio transmission and base transceiver station sites with a view to providing mobile broadband connectivity throughout South Africa.
MTN has also invested in the West Africa Cable System (WACS), and in the East Africa Cable System (EASSy) undersea cables.
But Lambotharan reportedly pointed out that for many customers the first internet experience would be via a mobile handset, highlighting the high price of purchasing computers and modems.
The company did not reply to request for comments before press time.
