South Africa-based MTN Group has named former CEO Phuthuma Nhleko as its new chairman and non-executive director.
Nhleko replaces Cyril Ramaphosa whose retirement was announced in March, the telco said in a statement.
Nhleko, who starts his new role today (29 May), has served as chairman of MTN in the past, specifically from 2001 to 2002. He subsequently became president and CEO, remaining as such until 2011.
The Johannesburg Stock Exchange-listed company said its board believes Nhleko’s previous association with the company and wider telecoms experience will benefit the group, which operates in 22 countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
