The government of Cameroon is to renew MTN’s operating licence and award it a 3G licence worth US$125m, with Orange soon to reach a similar deal, according to reports.
Cameroon Minister of Post and Telecommunications was cited saying that a signing ceremony with the South African mobile giant would be held today, 11 March, Reuters reported. The newswire also cited sources who suggested that the French incumbent would sign an agreement “soon”.
The Ministry of Posts & Telecommunications (Minpostel) and MTN could not be reached for comment by press time.
Number three operator Nexttel, a subsidiary of Vietnam’s Viettel, launched services last year, in an agreement that included a 3G licence.
Cameroon had mobile penetration of 73% as of the end of 2014, according to analysts at Budde.
