South Africa’s MTN and Telkom are still in network sharing talks, Telkom has said in a new stock exchange filing. The number two mobile operator and incumbent/number four cellco added that they are seeking legal and regulatory approvals.
The two “remain in discussions regarding the potential extension of their existing roaming agreement to include bilateral roaming and outsourcing of the operation of Telkom’s radio access network,” according to the statement.
The companies last informed the market on their talks in May.
Mobile network sharing is a common theme across Europe and expected to become more widespread in Africa, where operators are increasingly sharing passive infrastructure.
In February, MTN was linked to possible takeover interest in Telkom, which is awaiting final approval to complete its acquisition of fibre-focused Neotel.
