Mozambique’s telecom regulator expects to release the tender for its third mobile licence in the first week of March.
“The regulation regarding the licence was released last Friday (January 29) and the tender should be issued a month from then,” Americo Muchanga, who heads the regulator INCM, told TelecomFinance.
INCM will work with a technical consultant but no financial advisers.
Expected bidders for the 15-year licence are likely to include Portugal Telecom or its Angolan subsidiary Unitel, which is shortlisted for the privatisation of Zamtel in neighbouring Zambia.
Mozambique’s licence process has been repeatedly delayed, with Muchanga previously saying that a tender would be issued before the end of 2009.
The country is currently only host to two operators, Vodafone-controlled Vodacom and state-owned MCel.
