Moroccan regulator Agence Nationale de Reglementation de Telecom (ANRT) has awarded LTE licences to the country’s existing three cellcos:
Etisalat’s Maroc Telecom, Zain subsidiary Inwi and Orange’s Meditel.
Maroc Telecom paid Dh1bn (US$99.9m) for spectrum in the 800MHz, 1800MHz and 2.6GHz bands; Meditel paid Dh500.4m (US$49.9m); and Inwi paid Dh 503m (US$50.1m).
The telcos will also pay a total of Dh860m (US$85.7m) to support the country’s spectrum reallocation, the ANRT said. As part of the licence terms, the operators must deploy and operate 4G networks covering 65% of the Moroccan population within five years and provide minimum average download speed of 2 mbps for 90% of the population.
