Moroccan cellcos Etisalat’s Maroc Telecom, Zain subsidiary Inwi and Orange’s Medi Telecom have submitted 4G licence bids with industry regulator ANRT.
ANRT said that when making its decision, it would evaluate the telcos’ strategy and financial offer, as well as their plans for infrastructure deployment, coverage and quality of service.
The initial plan had been to award 4G licences at the beginning of 2013, but this was postponed several times, with the process finally launching in November last year.
Maroc Telecom makes first investment in Atlantique companies
Earlier this week, Maroc Telecom announced a MAD1.6bn (US$162.49m) five-year investment in the Atlantique Telecom companies acquired for €474m from Etisalat in January. This was made possible by an interest-free, four-year loan.
The objective of the investment is to build out mobile and fixed-line networks in Benin, Central African Republic, Gabon, Cote d’Ivoire, Niger and Togo.
