Regional operator Cable & Wireless Communications (CWC) is trialling LTE in Monaco for commercial deployment before the end of 2013.
Monaco Telecom, which is 49% owned by CWC, 45% controlled by the state and 6% owned by regional bank CMB, has partnered with Swedish vendor Ericsson for the trial.
According to Monaco Telecom CEO Martin Peronnet, 70% of mobile handsets currently being sold in the Principality are smartphones, illustrating the importance of mobile data.
A CWC spokesman confirmed the trial is being held over the 2.6Ghz frequency band, utilising Monaco Telecom’s existing 4G licence.
