Moldova’s National Regulatory Agency for Electronic Communications and Information Technology (ANRCETI) has announced plans to issue 4G licences to three mobile operators – Orange Moldova, Moldcell and Moldtelecom – before the end of the year.
The regulator’s decision to award licences for frequencies in the 2500-2690MHz band was made in accordance with a government decree on the development of public electronic communications networks and broadband services.
Calls for applications in the 2500-2690MHz band will start once the licence conditions, currently subject to public consultation, are approved.
The three operators will have to submit formal applications for their licences and pay €10m (US$12.4m) each before 31 December. If any decide not to take up the offer, the regulator will put the licence(s) up for public tender.
ANRCETI expects the licences to be valid for nationwide coverage for 15 years.
The three operators have already tested LTE-access technology via provisional licences.
The regulator also said it will hold an auction for 50MHz of bandwidth in the 3750-3800MHz sub-band. The licence fee will be determined by the tender, which will have a starting price of €1m.
