Cellco Mobitel is looking to test and deploy the first LTE network in the country, according to local newspaper the Sunday Observer.
The company has reportedly chosen Chinese equipment vendor ZTE as its technology partner.
Mobitel will invest about US$60m to add 1,000 LTE-capable base stations to its existing network, according to the newspaper. The company could not be reached for comment before the press deadline.
The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) is looking to finalise the spectrum allocation for LTE soon, wrote the newspaper.
