Algerian mobile operator Mobilis has reportedly decided against selling a stake in itself to French incumbent Orange.
Discussions started about a year ago but according to French publication L’Express citing a letter from the Algerian communication ministry’s general secretary, state-owned Mobilis will not open up its share capital to the French telco.
Orange declined to comment on the report while Mobilis did not respond to a request for comment.
Mobilis, controlled by Algerie Telecom, is the country’s second-largest mobile carrier.
Orange has reportedly been looking to enter the Algerian market as part of its expansion plans on the African continent.
The operator is currently present in 19 countries across Africa and the Middle East, after selling its struggling Ugandan subsidiary earlier this year. It has also launched a strategic review of its Kenyan assets.
