UK mobile operators will be able to repurpose their 2G spectrum for 3G services from today, local regulator Ofcom has announced.
Allowing companies such as Vodafone, O2 and Everything Everywhere to repurpose their 900MHz and 1800MHz spectrum will help the sector meet growing demand for services including mobile internet browsing.
Highlighting the benefits of its decision, Ofcom said the move is likely to deliver greater network capacity for consumers and improved quality and widened coverage.
Its announcement follows a strategy document the regulator sent to the government on 25 October 2010, outlining the case for spectrum liberalisation.
