Microsoft’s chief software architect, Ray Ozzie, 54, is retiring from the company.
In an email sent to employees yesterday, CEO Steve Ballmer revealed Ozzie would stay with Microsoft for an undefined transitional period, assisting “efforts in the broader area of entertainment” before he retires.
“Beyond that, Ray has no plans at this time,” Ballmer added.
The email also highlighted Ozzie’s role in catalyzing Microsoft’s drive to develop cloud computing. Over the past five years, Ozzie has led the development of web-based services that complement Microsoft’s existing software products, such as Windows and Office.
Ballmer said: “Ray has played a critical role in helping us to assume the leadership position in the cloud, and positioned us well for future success.”
Microsoft, which was unable to comment before the press deadline, did not reveal whether or not it would be seeking a replacement.
