Mexican triple-play operator Megacable is reportedly planning to launch MVNO services by 2016.
The company is looking to take advantage of recent regulatory changes aimed at encouraging competition in the mobile market, according to a report by Mexican financial daily El Financiero quoting Megacable’s IR director Saul Gil.
Megacable, which currently offers pay-TV, internet and fixed-line services, had already made an attempt at entering the quad-play market in 2011 by launching a MVNO offering using Telefonica’s network.
However, the venture was unsuccessful as the market and regulatory framework were not favourable for MVNOs at the time, Gil was reported as saying.
Since then, a new telecoms bill has been introduced, forcing incumbent America Movil, which controls 70% of the country’s mobile market and 80% of the fixed-line segment, to sell a number of assets to reduce its market share.
