Japanese satellite manufacturer Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (MELCO) has completed the expansion of its satellite production facility in Kamakura increasing its annual production capacity to eight satellites.
MELCO, which spent approximately Y3bn (US$31.7m) on the upgrade, is seeking to increasingly tap the global satellite market as well as net more domestic contracts from the Japanese Space Agency JAXA. MELCO’s DS2000 platform weighs around 5 tonnes and is capable of providing up to 15kW of power via a maximum 72 transponders.
The company is currently constructing the meteorological satellites Himawari-8 and Himawari-9 as well as the ALOS-2 satellite that will succeed the original Advanced Land Observing Satellite, also known as Daichi, in providing disaster relief data.
