Alisher Usmanov, the majority shareholder in Russian mobile operator MegaFon, and shareholders in local mobile broadband operator Scartel (Yota) will reportedly seal a deal this week to combine their assets under a new holding company.
The new holding will have access to more than half of Russia’s most-developed LTE frequencies, Russian and international media reported citing local business daily Vedomosti.
On 18 June, Russia’s Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) announced it had approved a proposal submitted by MegaFon affiliate Garsdale Services Investment to acquire Scartel, which operates under the brand name Yota.
Earlier media reports said Usmanov would own more than 80% of the new holding company which, in turn, would own Usmanov’s 50%-plus-one-share stake in MegaFon and all Scartel shares.
Russia’s communications ministry is set to announce the results of its LTE spectrum tender tomorrow (12 July). Telecoms regulator Roskomnadzor has named approved bidders as MegaFon, VimpelCom, MTS, Rostelecom, TTK, Summa Telecom, Tele2 Voronezh and Tele2 Omsk.
