Mexico’s triple-play operator Megacable is looking to rent airtime and data from America Movil to launch an MVNO in the country by 2016.
The company is waiting for America Movil’s fixed telephony operator Telmex to publish its rental prices, a Megacable spokesperson said.
Megacable, which currently offers pay-TV, internet and fixed-line services, had already made an attempt at entering the quad-play market in 2011 by launching a MVNO offering using Telefonica’s network. The spokesperson confirmed that the MVNO agreement with Telefonica is still in place, but also added that the company will not renew it in the future.
“The big difference between 2011 and now is the regulatory reform and the fact that America Movil is a dominant player in the market”, he said.
Incumbent America Movil, which controls 70% of the country’s mobile market and 80% of the fixed-line segment, has been required by the country’s telecoms regulator, the IFT, to share network infrastructure and dispose of some assets in a bid to curb its market dominance and encourage competition.
