The UK’s planned 2.6GHz auction, which was initially scheduled to take place in 2008, is unlikely to happen this year, a government official said.
Speaking to ZDnet, the UK’s independent spectrum broker Kip Meek said it appears likely that the auction will not take place before 2011 at the earliest
In part, he says the delay is due to operators’ reluctance to buy the spectrum before a settlement is reached over the amount of 900MHz spectrum that they will be allowed to refarm for 3G purposes.
Settling this would allow operators to better assess their need for 2.6GHz spectrum, which is most valuable for 4G services such as LTE or WiMAX.
