The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has assigned frequencies in the 2600MHz band to nine companies, reported Malaysian news agency Bernama.
The companies – which include mobile operators (Celcom, Maxis, DiGi, U-Mobile), WiMax players (Asiaspace, Packet One, REDtone, YTL Communications) and a firm offering IT and e-commerce services (Puncak Semangat) – will use the spectrum to roll out 4G wireless broadband services from January 1, 2013.
The MCMC was quoted as saying that the nine companies will be required to pay fees for the spectrum, without disclosing how much, but will not receive any funding from the MCMC or the Universal Service Provision (USP) fund to use the frequencies.
The MCMC could not be reached for comment.
