Cellco Maxis and local WiMax operator Asiaspace are reportedly in talks to roll out joint LTE services.
Maxis is expected to build and operate the network, while Asiaspace will provide the spectrum, according to local reports. A final agreement has yet to be signed.
Last year, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) allocated 20MHz of 2.6GHz spectrum to several companies including Maxis and Asiaspace. But the regulator told the companies the frequencies could not be used until 1 January 2013.
South Korean cellco SK Telecom has announced it will invest another MR50m (US$16.4m) in WiMax operator Packet One Networks (P1) to benefit from the company’s expected strong growth in broadband. In June last year, SK Telecom announced a US$100m investment in P1.
Following the new investment, SK expects to remain P1’s secondlargest shareholder with its 25.8 per cent stake. Local WiMax equipment provider Green Packet, which owns a 57.1 per cent stake, is reportedly set to pay MR151.1m (US$49.6m) to increase its ownership in the company.
Meanwhile, P1 is urgently looking to get more spectrum in face of an increasing demand for its broadband services. The company has written to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to ask for an extra 30 MHz in the 2300 MHz band.
