The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has awarded eight telcos with 2600MHz spectrum for 4G services.
Celcom Axiata, DiGi Telecommunications, Maxis Broadband, Packet One Networks, Puncak Semangat, REDtone Marketing, U Mobile and YTL Communications all won licences, according to an announcement made by the Malaysian telecoms regulator.
The operators are expected to enter partnerships to share spectrum and infrastructure, and to allow operators which were not allocated spectrum to run 4G MVNO services.
The 2600MHz licences will run from 1 January 2013 until 31 December 2017, according to announcements made by the operators on the Malaysian stock exchange today.
REDtone’s announcement added that the telco will submit a six-year bank guarantee for the spectrum of RM10m (US$3.3m).
Celcom Axiata and Maxis both announced on the bourse that they had been awarded 2x10MHz spectrum in the 2600MHz band. Celcom Axiata is reportedly looking to invest RM300m (US$98.5m) over the next three years to support its 4G network.
“MCMC is always committed to finding the right balance between the needs of consumers, investors and other stakeholders of the industry,” said MCMC chairman Dato’ Mohamed Sharil Tarmizi in the regulator’s statement. “We believe that the balance struck between ensuring healthy competition in the market and promoting industry development will help spur continued growth for existing service providers and provide opportunity for new market entrants.”
