The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has amended the licensing regime of telecoms operators to allow licence holders to provide both fixed and mobile services, BNL Times reports.
The government reportedly published the regulatory changes in the government gazette on 23 September.
The amendment concerns fixed-line licence holders ACL Limited and Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL) as well as mobile providers Airtel Malawi and Telecom Networks Malawi (NTM).
Celcom, owned by local businessmen, the Mulli Brothers, was awarded a dual fixed and mobile licence in April in anticipation of the change in regulation.
G-Mobile was awarded a licence in 2008 but has so far not launched services.
The regulator was not immediately available for comments.
